ATA Junior players achieved some fantastic results over the July school holidays!

Firstly at the Future Stars Australian Ranking Event in Melville, 11yr old Abbi Gibson defeated the no 1 seed in the semi finals of the girls 14s Singles main draw and won the Final against the no 3 seed.

Abbi then backed up her Australian Ranking title with another main draw final at the City Of Joondalup Championships in the 14s. Abbi went down in a close final 5-7, 6-4, but never gave in and worked hard all the way.

Also mattat this event Matt Watkins made the 16s Doubles Final teaming with Perth’s Tom Oliver. The boys played well to make the final and gain valuable AR points.

At the last event of the holidays, The WA Open, Matt also won through qualifying, to the main draw. Abbi Gibson continued her good form playing in the 16s Girls. Many thought this may be out of her league being only 11, and advice from other coaches was to ease into 16s, (especially in a gold event), but Abbi showed no fear and defeated the No 2 seed in her second round match after winning her first round 6-1, 6-1. She won a tight 3 set match against the no 2 seed on one of the show courts at the State Tennis Centre and then backed it up with another strong performance in the quarter finals, but unfortunately lost in 3 close sets. The closeness of the tennis will do nothing but boost the confidence of Abbi as she defeated the no 5 seed again in 3 sets in the 5-8th play off rounds.

Also well done to George Hodgkinson, Nelson Stanborough, Brock Dawson, Ulrich Kriek on their efforts on the holidays.  Even if you don’t come away with a trophy, the experience will put them in good stead for future events!
