Albany’s Abbi Gibson (11) represented WA in the National School Sport Bruce Cup for the second year running. The event was held on the grass courts of the Albury Tennis Club (NSW).
Abbi had an outstanding tournament, finishing undefeated in the teams event and Helping WA to an awesome Silver Medal finish, the best ever by a WA team.
In the School Sport Australian Singles Championships, Abbi, Seeded (12) went through the draw without dropping a set, including a win over the No 1 seed in the quarter finals 6/3, 6/4. Abbi then won her semi final 6/4, 6/4 and set up a final against Victoria’s Zali Morris. Abbi took the first set, 6/2, lost the next set to love, but regrouped and took the 3rd set match tie breaker 10/5. A massive display of determination and effort and composure not to fall in a hole in the breaker. Talking to Abbi’s parents afterwards, and she was absolutely shattered. Playing the big matches as the no 1 in the teams event every day. Playing some tough matches as she was only the no 12 seed (remember she plays up in 16s so didn’t have the points some other girls have).
We are all super proud of Abbi and her efforts. She has a great support group around her. Her mum and dad are always at the courts, working on the basics and building her serve, and working on her strength and conditioning (thanks to Len at TA for advice on her program). Big thanks to Ash, Brad and John Dyer at Next Step TA in Perth, where Abbi trains when she is away for tournaments. It’s a great support group and one of the reasons Abbi succeeds is not only her talent, but the group she has around her are all on the same page, working with each other!
Keep up the great work Abbi!
